Fourteen years ago, Erick walked through the doors of ICI’s very first club in Cicero. This fall he stepped up in front of his church family to share what God did in his life before his baptism:
“Being in the darkest places and not being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel was always my biggest fear. Knowing that I have a loving God that sacrificed His life for me and everyone else in this world gave me hope. Knowing that God Himself gives us second chances by letting us repent – that gave me peace to understand the acceptance of forgiveness and brought me comfort as I take a step further in my faith. I would love to take the power and knowledge God has given me to bring hope to others…”
Erick also reflected on the role mentors played in his journey. Over 14 years, no less than 10 ICI leaders invested months and years in his life. He thanked them by name. “I want to give a big shout-out to Inner City Impact and all the mentors for guiding me into my spiritual journey. Without you I don’t know where I would be standing – Emelissa, Joseph, Oscar, Brian, Chris, Jordan, Dino and BJ.”
Erick’s story is an example of what we pray for with each child at ICI. Erick participated in many activities at ICI and came to Christ during summer camp. From that first day, through clubs, sports leagues, outings, and camping trips, Erick has been taking steps toward a new future. A future where he is motivated to share the love he received with the community around him.

While we often see considerable hardship in the city, at ICI, we are time and time again in a position to see God impacting our students’ lives in big ways. Something as small as the gift of a Bible can change someone's life.

We always tell our camp staff to remember, “It isn’t over until the last kid has gone home.” Levi, one of our high school leaders, was exhausted and faced the temptation to rest on the ride home from camp, but he used the ride as an opportunity to have more conversations with kids about what they learned at camp. His discussion with Jayden was encouraging.
