The enthusiasm among the kids was palpable; they were pleading with us to turn the bus around and return to camp instead of heading home, showing how impactful their experiences had been. At the end of our camp week, we always remind our staff and volunteers, “It isn’t over until the last kid has gone home.” This year, we truly experienced the significance of that phrase, demonstrating the lasting impact our efforts can have. That camp is more than just a series of activities—it can be a transformative time that leaves a lasting impression on both the campers and the leaders.
One of our remarkable high school leaders, Levi, emerged as a key leader during our summer day camp and summer camp week. Despite visibly battling exhaustion, a stubborn cold, and the relentless grip of seasonal allergies, Levi remained steadfast in his commitment to the campers, demonstrating an inspiring level of dedication that didn’t go unnoticed.
As the time approached for the kids to return home, many, including Levi, felt the allure of resting and catching up on much-needed sleep during the bus ride. However, we consistently remind our counselors that this particular journey back offers a unique and invaluable opportunity—a chance to connect with the campers, reflecting on their experiences, the lessons imparted, and the myriad thoughts and feelings they’ve encountered throughout their time at camp. Levi wholeheartedly recognized the significance of this moment.
On the bus, as the hum of the tires on the road created a comforting backdrop, Levi ignited a heartfelt conversation with Jayden, one of the campers. They delved deep into a variety of spiritual topics, examining the nuances of faith and what it truly means to cultivate a relationship with Jesus. As their discussion unfolded, the warmth of their connection became palpable; Jayden’s curiosity and enthusiasm grew, leading him to express a heartfelt desire to explore that relationship more profoundly. In a moment that felt both sacred and significant, Levi and Jayden joined in prayer as Jayden gave his life to the Lord. A beautiful moment in Jayden’s faith journey that also formed a lasting memory of connection during the ride home.
